The Danish American Home is available for senior adults who seek semi-independent living. Its secure home-like environment combines warm Scandinavian traditions with excellent meals and fellowship.
Our new home in Racine, Wisconsin opened in the summer of 1993 with accommodations for up to fifty residents. Each resident or couple may have individual living/bedroom and bathroom facilities while sharing common dining, lounges and other activity spaces. The development of the new Danish American Home was generated from the growing need for an alternative to maintaining a home while still retaining the feeling of freedom and semi-independence.
WHAT IS THE DANISH AMERICAN HOME AND WHOM DO WE SERVE?
The Danish American Home of Racine is an independent non-profit corporation that has served senior adults since 1933. We have a quality reputation and an excellent tradition of maintenance and homemaking for our residents and community. The Danish American Home of Racine enjoys wide community support. A strong volunteer organization consistently contributes time toward facility upkeep and resident support.
Most residents come to our home completely healthy and able. Our residents are expected to be self ambulatory and to independently attend to their personal needs of hygiene, dress, financial affairs, and to attend meals without assistance.

CONVENIENT AND COMFORTABLE LOCATION
Our "West Racine" location at Ostergaard and Wright Avenues was selected because the residents will enjoy a traditional neighborhood environment. Conveniently located near churches, shopping, transportation, health care, theaters and restaurants, this area is served by Highway 31 (Green
Bay Road) and Highway 20 (Washington Avenue). The I-94 freeway is within six miles and the Lake Michigan shore is within three miles.
THE RESIDENT'S ROOMS
In addition to sharing common spaces, the residents have options to select a variety of living/bedroom floor plans ranging from singles and shared two room suites to deluxe two room units and three room suites. These unit options comfortably serve singles or couples. Each unit has an entry off an internal corridor, a living/sleeping area with a bathroom, emergency call devices and generous closet spaces. Living/bedroom units include control of heating and individual air conditioning units. Other options available include a private or semi-private bathroom, various tub or shower configurations, and floor level selection.
SHARED FACILITIES AND AMENITIES
Shared spaces include a main entrance/reception lobby, a central kitchen and dining room, a large multi-purpose room with auxiliary kitchen, various lounges, TV and library areas, a central office and conference room, porches and decks, washroom facilities for the physically challenged, guest washrooms, a central elevator, and individual mail boxes. Service-related spaces include a wellness room, a hair salon, resident's storage, laundry and parking.
THE BUILDING AND FURNISHINGS
The building has been developed with three floor levels with the ground floor nestled into a sloping landscaped site. The ground floor includes the main entry as well as most of the shared facilities and large activity spaces. The first and second floors, which primarily include the resident rooms and smaller shared areas and lounges, are easily served by three stairways and the central elevator.
The brick and stucco exterior is a friendly addition to the style of the neighborhood and enhances the residential area. Quality construction, acoustic separation, ease of access, flexibility and adaptability have been incorporated into the design.
A blend of contemporary traditional and antique interior furnishings combined with resident's personal selections will assure individuality and diversity plus add a personal touch.
